Basingstoke's Men’s 1s faced tough opposition in a bid to take county honours, pitted against Bournemouth. With both teams competing in the same league, it would be a tight game, Basingstoke winning both comings together during the season, but Bournemouth having sealed promotion.
The game was an edgy affair, Bournemouth looking to exploit the wide channels and long ball early. With a clear game plan the men in red held the centre pitch and soaked up pressure, building phases of short passing and counter attacking hockey Basingstoke looked threatening. A break down the right channel after good work by the defensive unit allowed Grant Rouse to cut in at the Bournemouth goal and send the ball to the arriving Dean Record to deflect it home for the lead. Bournemouth won a penalty corner, but keeper Adam Smith cleared away the threat neatly. Bournemouth showed their real ability at their second penalty corner, with a fast paced drag flick to the top left evening the score. Mark Smith had the best chance to go ahead before the break, cutting through players with skill he found space to get a well struck shot away but found it met by the Bournemouth keeper.
After half time Basingstoke now reenergised and focused, pressed on creating numerous chances but with no reward. Midfield veteran Alex Hope kept the game in Basingstoke’s control. In the closing minutes, Basingstoke won another short corner, and with the routine called by the coach Ryan Casson, a smart injection by Daniel Bowden out to the top of the ‘D’ was met by Graham Garrett-Lang who disguised the ball and slipped left David Stones who sent home a fast low shot, beating the keeper between his pads to go ahead! Basingstoke soaked up the pressure and heard the whistle that confirmed them as Hampshire Trophy winners.
On Saturday 11th May, over 300 people attended the England Hockey Awards 2019 to celebrate everyone within hockey. Basingstoke were proud that Miranda Smith was awarded the England Hockey Lifetime Achievement Award! An integral member of the club, everyone knows Miranda, and she has been pivotal to Basingstoke Hockey for 47 years as a player, coach, official and committee member. She is currently the Club President, providing strong leadership, guiding the committee to make the right decisions for the future stability of the club. She’s worked for 8 years to get our 2nd pitch and works relentlessly with members to fundraise to make this possible, it is scheduled to be laid this summer! She’s devoted so much time to developing future talent, who now play in national, regional and local leagues, and has tirelessly identified opportunities to get more people playing hockey, and for the last 5 years has organised Back to Hockey, with Walking Hockey coming this summer! In that time the Ladies section has grown from 4 teams to 7. The work Miranda does behind the scenes is invaluable to Basingstoke Hockey Club to ensure it functions effectively week on week. On top of that, Basingstoke frequently wins awards for its hospitality to teams and officials, and this is all thanks to Miranda. Danny Bowden said ‘Miranda is a Club legend, and I’m so happy she has been recognised on the National stage’. Miranda also represented England at O65’s, winning a Gold Medal!!
Basingstoke Hockey Club were proud to again host the England Ladies Over-35’s Regional Tournament this weekend. With 3 Basingstoke players, Gemma Carswell, Sarah Lucas and Alice Lane in action for the South team, there was much support on a sunny weekend from the home Club.
