Basingstoke ladies 1 beat Teddington
By Alice Lane
Exciting game for ladies 1s
Basingstoke sponsored by KJS Solicitors made a lively start to the game, attacking Teddington's defence at pace. Teddington gave away a foul in their defensive circle, but rather than stopping for a penalty corner Basingstoke showed their experience and professionalism by using the advantage afforded to them by the umpire, allowing Jo Bowden to open the scoring after just seven minutes. Teddington responded positively, making it very difficult for Basingstoke to keep possession. Teddington scored two goals in two minutes by attacking down the wings and crossing the ball hard in to the Basingstoke circle. The first goal was a deflection in front of the keeper and the second a lifted shot from close range. As the first half progressed Basingstoke grew more accustomed to Teddingston's style of play. Basingstoke started to move the ball around quickly, one such transfer opened up space on the right hand side for Basingstoke to attack the circle. An initial shot was parried by the keeper, but only as far as Roxy O'Dea who confidently volleyed home the equaliser after 21 minutes. Within the first five minutes of the second half Basingstoke had taken the lead. Clare Griffiths' shot left her stick like a rocket to beat the Teddington keeper from a tight angle at the right post. Teddington continued to look for an equaliser, however Basingstoke were equal to their efforts with man of the match Claire Bowman demonstrating her superior attacking skills, commitment and awareness. Basingstoke closed out the game 3-2 winners. The result keeps Basingstoke joint second in the league. Next week they welcome Tulse Hill & Dulwich to Down Grange.
