Ladies 1s beat Maidenhead 4-2
By Alice Lane
Ladies 1s win to move up the table to 3rd
Basingstoke went to Maidenhead full of confidence, but also mindful that it could be a potential banana skin, as the Maidenhead desperately needed points. Maidenhead had some good spells of possession in the first section of the game; however it was Roxy O'Dea that opened the scoring with a well executed penalty corner for Basingstoke. From this point the goals started to flow. There were some patches of excellent team interplay which tore open the Maidenhead defence. Claire Bowman and Fi Parker both scored from close range, to extend the lead to three. Maidenhead kept working hard and were rewarded with a goal before half time. The Basingstoke goal keeper saved the initial shot at the far post, but following a scramble Maidenhead came out with the ball and scored past the defender on the line. In the second half Basingstoke continued to attack well, but could not extend their lead. Maidenhead were awarded a controversial penalty corner, which they scored. At this point Basingstoke became a little nervous and maybe rued their earlier missed opportunities. Maidenhead pushed hard for the equaliser but another penalty corner gave Basingstoke captain Catriona Bausor a goal and sealed the result 4-2. This win sees the ladies continue to move up the South 1 league table into 3rd position.
