Ladies 1s beat Spencer 2-0
By Alice Lane
Ladies 1s climb to 4th following their win over Spencer.
Newly promoted Spencer had started the season well, so Basingstoke knew it would be a tough game. Basingstoke began brightly using quick breaks to earn them possession in some excellent attacking positions. Spencer also showed their intent with a number of positive moves and circle penetrations. Basingstoke opened the scoring through a brilliantly executed shot from Roxy O'Dea at a penalty corner. At one point it looked like Basingstoke would go on to extend their lead in the first half; however, Spencer were very resilient and made life hard for Basingstoke all over the pitch. In the second half Spencer were pushing for the equaliser. During a penalty corner the ball hit a Basingstoke player on the line and Spencer were awarded a penalty stoke. Man of the match and goal keeper Gemma Carswell made a superb save to deny the Spencer striker. This gave Basingstoke the lift they needed and now applied an unsustainable level of pressure on the opposition. At a Basingstoke penalty corner the initial shot was blocked but some quick team interplay allowed Kirsty Kent to slot the second goal home from close range. Basingstoke saw the game out 2 nil winners. Next weekend they visit Maidenhead.
