Disappointing result for ladies 1s
By Alice Lane
Surbiton 2s 3 - Basingstoke 0
Basingstoke ladies 1s were full of confidence and enthusiasm following a high scoring and successful pre-season. The team welcomed Emily Harris into their dynamic attacking line up. However, they knew they would have their work cut out for them in their season opener, away to last year's league winners Surbiton 2s. The game was quite open during the early phases of the game, with both teams making positive attacks. As the half progressed a talented and well prepared Surbiton side applied more pressure forcing Basingstoke to defend deep. Surbiton attacked the circle and Basingstoke were unable to clear their lines effectively, the ball popped loose falling to a Surbiton player in front of goal who opened the scoring just before half time. In the second half Basingstoke were determined to get back on terms and attempted to push Surbiton back. They worked hard to stretch the game; however this took its toll and Subiton's counter attacks were lightning paced and well executed. Basingstoke had a number of quick attacks, but could not get the goal they wanted. Their only penalty corner of the game went wide of the far post. Surbiton continued to attack, winning a number of penalty corners, two of which they converted making the score 3 nil at the final whistle. Basingstoke worked hard to the very end and despite being disappointed with the result took lots of positives from the game. Defender Alice Lane was player of the match. Basingstoke look forward to bouncing back next week when they welcome Oxford University to Down Grange on Saturday 30th September at 13.30.
