Basingstoke ladies 1s, sponsored by KJ Smith Solicitors made a perfect start to their match against Reading 2s. From push-back they attacked up the right-hand side, moving into the circle and winning a penalty corner, which was expertly finished by Roxy O'Dea. Basingstoke continued to attack and before long they had doubled their lead. Once again, Roxy O'Dea was involved, this time she carried the ball along the baseline before passing to Fi Parker who scored from close range. At this stage, it looked as if Basingstoke would have run away with the match; however, Reading got back into the game after a long pass into the circle was met by a Reading attacker who scored a deflected goal into the far post. This gave Reading confidence, resulting in a strong comeback by front loading their attacking play.

The 1s extended their lead once again, following a tenacious run from Catriona Bausor who out-played numerous players, topping it off by beating the keeper to make the score 3-1. Reading didn’t give up, winning a penalty corner when Basingstoke were unable to make an effective clearance. Reading seized this opportunity by scoring their second goal, and the game concluded with a 3-2 win to Basingstoke. An important three points to the ladies 1s, which puts them back to third place in the league, and still in the running for a promotion.

The Ladies 2s drew 1-1 against Southampton, with Basingstoke’s goal coming from, player of the match, Katie Hossick.

The ladies 3s lost 3-2 against Romsey this week. With Dorset clubs needing to be assimilated into the league next season, the ladies 3s need to finish in the top seven to avoid going down, so it was disappointing to lose to a side lower down. Despite taking an early lead through Jasmine Payne, Basingstoke seemed to switch off defensively and Romsey scored three quick goals in reply. In the second half, the 3s had several chances to score, with player of the match, Tania Bridge eventually reducing the deficit, but resolute defending by Romsey condemned Basingstoke to a disappointing defeat.

Isle of Wight were no match against the ladies 4s, who annihilated them, by winning 9-0. Ellie Rixon was on top form scoring four goals for Basingstoke and was awarded player of the match. Beth Flintoff also got her name on the scoresheet with two goals, and the rest of the goals came from, Amy Sambell, Sharon Holden and Jo Gault.

The ladies 5s were up against a much-improved Southampton 5s in their away game this week. The 5s found themselves on the back-foot and scrambled round in the first twenty minutes trying to get their bearings, following Southampton’s onslaught and attacking playing. However, Basingstoke fought back, stepping up their game in the late stages of the first half and scoring their first goal, which came from a clearance from the back, that was fed into midfield, then through to an unmarked Toyah Jefferies who easily found the back of the net. Southampton weren’t giving up and started the second half with the same forceful onslaught. There were some scary moments when they could have levelled the game, but just couldn’t convert. Basingstoke sealed their victory through a fantastic goal from Captain Karen Binney, and the game concluded with a 2-0 win to the 5s.

The ladies 6s won 3-0 against Southampton University, with two goals from Jenny Rust and the other from Phillipa Spicer.

On a very wet Sunday afternoon the under 14 ladies started well in an initially evenly matched game against Fleet and Ewshot, taking an early lead through Jemima Froome. However, Fleet and Ewshot fought back and started playing some good hockey with no response from Basingstoke, scoring three goals in succession in the first half. In the second half, Maddy Ripton-Palmer scored Basingstoke’s second goal. In the latter stages of the second half, Fleet and Ewshot scored their fourth goal and the game concluded with a 2-4 loss to the under 14s, but a great effort from the whole team.

The under 16 girls lost 7-4 in their match against Andover. With Jess Pritchard and player of the match, Megan Payne scoring two goals each.

The men’s 1s drew 2-2 against Reigate, with Dean Record getting his name on the scoresheet with Basingstoke’s two goals. Unfortunately, the men’s 2s also lost, in a 2-1 defeat against Gillingham. The men’s 3s had the upper-hand in their game against Havant this week, winning 5-2.

A great score line for the men’s 4s who won 11-0 in their match against Portsmouth and Southsea. Player of the match JP Vout scored four goals, while Euan Rixon and Peter Wood, scored two goals each. Eliot Boyd, Adam Neighbour, Kyle McFee also got their names on the scoresheet.

The men's 6s struggled in their match against Aldershot and Farnham 6s, losing 2-4.

This weekend Basingstoke Minis hosted Alton, Aldershot and Farnham, Camberley and Farnborough, Fleet and Ewshot and Yateley at the mini festival. With representation from thirteen, under 8 teams (including four from Basingstoke Hockey Club) and nineteen under 10 teams (including four from Basingstoke Hockey Club). It was a busy weekend with 220 children plus parents and volunteers at Down Grange, and an army of volunteers doing their bit for the club. The children had an amazing time despite the wind and rain.
