Even though it’s half term, some of the Basingstoke Hockey Club teams continued their league matches this week.
Basingstoke ladies 1s, sponsored by KJS Solicitors were up against the newly promoted Spencer who have started well this season. Ladies 1s started well with strong possession and well-planned attacking play. Spencer also showed their intent with positive moves and circle penetrations. However, Basingstoke’s Roxy O'Dea opened the scoring through a brilliantly executed shot from a penalty corner. At one point in the first half, it like Basingstoke would go on to extend their lead; however, Spencer were resilient and kept Basingstoke at bay.
In the second half Spencer were pushing for the equaliser. During a penalty corner the ball hit a Basingstoke player on the line and Spencer were awarded a penalty stroke. Goalkeeper Gemma Carswell made a superb save to deny Spencer their equaliser, giving Basingstoke the lift, they needed to apply additional levels of pressure on the opposition. Basingstoke’s initial shot via a penalty corner was blocked. However, some quick team interplay allowed Kirsty Kent to slot the second goal home from close range. Basingstoke were worthy winners in a 2-nil win. Next weekend they are up against Maidenhead.
On a beautiful sunny autumn afternoon playing against a fiesty and energetic Hamble side, ladies 6s were worthy winners in a thrilling 7-2 win. Izzy Hussey managing to score four goals, and the other three goals coming from Shelley Rounding, Kate Murphy, and Luci McCallum. Kudos to a strong defence and midfield play which helped support the players upfront giving them opportunities to score. Man, of the match was awarded to Victoria O’Brien for brilliant play in midfield.
Basingstoke men's 1s were away to Barnes, it was a tough game concluding with a 2-2 draw, with Basingstoke goals coming from Dean Record and Luke Beddoes. The Men’s 2s lost 4-1 to Romsey whilst the men’s 3 won 1-0 against Fareham 6s. It was a rather unfortunate weekend of hockey for the men’s 4s who lost 1-6 against Winchester 5s, with Basingstoke’s goals coming from Euan Rixson.
The U12 boys won 1-0 against Winchester this week, with Basingstoke’s goal coming from Dylan Brockbank, with beautiful hockey being played in this hard-fought game. There could have been more goals had it not been for the fantastic goal-keeping from the Winchester goalkeeper. A good win and something the boys can take into their next match.
Basingstoke U10s played in their first In2Hockey tournament of the season with some good passing and utilisation of the space, with the boys and girls teams winning all their matches, so well done to them!
