- Players are graded by age and experience into training groups.
- Players are encouraged to practice at home.

Equipment
Basingstoke Hockey Club has an approved equipment supplier, Miranda Smith, who runs the club shop situated on the ground floor of the pavilion opposite the Astro surface. The shop is open from: 09:30 – 13:00 Saturdays, and 09:00 – 10:30 Sundays, and can offer discounts to club members.
Hockey Sticks
Hockey sticks are one of those things that you cannot buy “a size to big” and wait to grow into.
Please buy your stick from the club shop, or other reputable sports goods supplier, ensuring that you have the correct size (as a guide, placing three fingers on top of the stick should be level with the “belly button”). The club has a supply of sticks that it is able to provide for new members to borrow, until they can purchase their own.
Shin Pads
These are essential, and should be worn for both training and when playing matches. Proper hockey shin pads, which include ankle protection (unlike football shin pads) are recommended.
Mouth guards
A properly fitted mouth guard (gum shield) is highly recommended – requiring much less time and expense when compared to dental reconstruction!!
Footwear
Astro shoes are recommended to ensure “grip” when playing on the Astro artificial surface, but trainers are fine. Football boots, Rugby boots and other muddy footwear are not allowed to be used on the Astro surface.
Club Kit
Basingstoke Hockey Club team colours are: Shirts – Scarlet & white; Shorts/Skirts – Navy blue; Socks – Scarlet and white.
Shirts are provided by the club for Minis tournaments and Club matches, wearing of the rest of the club colours is not compulsory – but is recommended.
Tournaments and Matches
Playing
- All Mini players have the option to play in mini-hockey tournaments (minimum 6-a-side), which are held approximately once a month at Hockey clubs throughout Hampshire (Basingstoke’s is usually held in January).
- These tournaments are played for fun, and there are no official winners or recording of results.
- The rules of Mini Hockey apply – which are sympathetically applied, with the emphasis on safety.
- Tournaments usually run from 10:00 – 13:00, matches are approx 10 minutes.
- The U12, U14 & U16 teams play in the Hampshire youth (11-a-side) league, which are played on a fortnightly basis.
- The results of these matches are recorded, and league tables are produced.
- The normal rules of Hockey are applied – which are also sympathetically applied, with safety in mind.
- Teams are also entered into Cup matches.
- Matches are 35 minutes each way, with approx 10-minute half-time interval.
- Match fees are £3-00.
- Details of the venues and times will be provided by the Team Manager. Information will also be available on the BHC website: http://www.basingstoke-hockey.com/fixtures/index.htm.
- Players should arrive ready to play at least 15 minutes before the start of the match (Goal keepers may need to arrive earlier).
What to bring
- Hockey Stick
- Shin pads
- Mouth guard
- Warm, and waterproof, clothing (including Gloves and Hats).
- Drinks, preferably not carbonated, to assist in re-hydration.
- Snacks – some tournament venues may have food and drink available for sale, however it should not be assumed that these will always be available.
